The list of new sires for 2022 is shorter than in many recent seasons, but it is headed by champion and dual classic star St Mark's Basilica. Brilliant miler Palace Pier and Breeders' Cup winner Space Blues are also there. Some showed their best at two, others are being marketed for the National Hunt sector.

High-class sprinter at two and three and Group 2-placed on his only start at four, this grandson of Rock of Gibraltar (Danehill) missed out on a Group 1 placing when fourth to Battaash in the Nunthorpe. His close relations include the Group 1-placed nine-furlong Group 3 scorer Enforcer (Efisio) and his distant ones some Grade 1 stars in the USA. Likely source of sprinters and milers.

His first stallion son was the blacktype sire Cappella Sansevero. Juvenile G2-winner and 220,000-guineas Tattersalls Book 1 graduate Alkumait is his latest. This precocious son of the high-class sprinter and rising star No Nay Never made a winning juvenile debut in April, won the Molecomb by over three lengths and was only beaten by a neck in the Flying Childers and by three-quarters of a length in the Middle Park. The grandson of top nine-furlong horse and leading international sire Scat Daddy (Johannesburg) – got his best from five to 12 furlongs – is out of a mile winner from a family associated with mostly seven-to-ten-furlong horses, so he’s likely to get his best winners at anywhere from five furlongs to a mile and a quarter.
